Vincenzo Bossotti - Cisterna d'Asti

The Extremely modest Cristina Bossotti and husband Davide decided to take over the family vineyards and Cantina in 2001 that had previously been run by her father Vincenzo and the wines produced prior to 2001 were mainly for family consumption and sold in bulk until 2001 when Davide (wine maker) and Cristina decided to bottle and sell wine with the name Vincenzo Bossotti after Cristian's father. 

Cisterna d'Asti itself is a hilltop village which sits at approximately 300 meters above sea level - the Bossotti Cantina sits at 375 meters. Its elevation hints at the origin of the village name: Cisterna means "well" or "reservoir", and it is likely that a significant natural water supply was once located here. 

Cisterna d'Asti DOC was created in 2002 making it one of the newest DOC's. Interestingly unlike the case with Barbera d'Asti DOCG or many other local DOCs, Cisterna is not a grape variety but is a monica that covers red wines produced around the village of Cisterna d'Asti, and neigboring communes right in the centre of Piedmont. Located 15 kilometers north of Alba and about the same distance southwest of Asti town, the catchment area for this DOC zone straddles the border between the Cuneo and Asti provinces. These form the heart of Piedmontese wine country. In fact if you stand at the top of the cantina you can see La Morra to the top right and its southwestern half overlaps with the northern half of Roero. 

Cisterna d'Asti DOC wine is made predominantly from Croatina (more commonly grown in Alto Piedmonte), which must account for 80 percent of the blend but Davide chooses to use 100% Croatina for the Cisterna d'Asti DOC, however, this wine only makes up a small amount of the production at Bossotti with the larger production being Barbera d' Asti DOCG and two Langhe DOC bottlings; Nebbiolo and Arneis - the later both coming from Roero but as the Roero DOCG states it does not allow the use of the DOCG on the label if the winery is not located within the Roero commune thus the wines are labeled with the "Langhe" denomination.

The quality of the terroir here is confirmed with its proximity to famed Piedmonts communes and its recent jump to DOC status but thankfully the prices at Bossotti are still as modest as its owners. These are brilliant value wines wine in the traditional vein and well worth you attention.

Since 2002 Davide has worked organically and under guidance of Mario Redoglia (oenologist) who has also played a bit part in organic farming throughout Piedmont most notably working with Nadia & Ottavio Verrua from Cascina Cascina 'Tavjin in Monferrato although the vineyards are not certified as such Davide believes the wines should sell on their merits as being great wine, not because its marketed as organic or biodynamic or natural and having always traditionally worked in a natural way in the vineyard and cellar this seemed the right decision. All wines are vinified with natural yeast and with a very little amount of added sulfur to maintain the integrity of the wines once in bottle.

All wines are vinified in stainless steel and a combination of old botti and barrique.

Like all great producers the vilification process is simple and the resulting wines are fresh, textured and expressive and are a pleasure to drink.
